I wish more similar games had this hybrid bot/swappable player mindset when it comes to single-player It would extend the life of many co-op games by making them more accessible to newer players who may not have friends willing to play with them and face abuse by veteran players based on the fact of how new they are to the game. You can always swap to said party member if they get into trouble and need to retreat, or if you need to rush them to save a resource generator. You can order said AI to wait in place if you need a hero to support a defensive line, and it will effectively fight enemies unless it gets absolutely swarmed or closed in by an elite.

However, you can switch between all party members at will in single-player (number keys or spacebar), and when you are not playing as a character, an AI will take over their control. It has some really helpful mechanics you may bring as big a party as you can in multiplayer into a single-player run (to unlock the 3rd slot in single-player RN you need to reach a certain map, no spoilers, when you start out you can bring 2 characters in a single-player run.)
